Acne scars are a long-term reminder of the suffering you underwent with acne breakouts. Whether you were a teenager or an adult, you may like to get rid of your scars, so you have tried creams and other home remedies to little or no effect. It may be time to take the next step for acne scar removal and we may be able to help. We offer several treatments to remove acne scars and one or a combination of several may be right for you.
Different Types of Acne Scars
There are two main categories of scars left behind by the different severities of the breakouts. Hypertrophic scars are caused during the natural healing process of the body. It produces too much collagen to heal the wound so the scar is larger than the lesion. Atrophic scars are like depressions because the body didn’t produce enough collagen to fill the wound. Four types of scars fall in these two categories and each requires a specific removal treatment. Many people have more than one type of scar.
Different Acne Scar Removal Treatments
When you have your first consultation with our acne scar specialist, you can learn about the type of scars you have and the recommended treatments. One or more of the following may be recommended.
- Dermal fillers consist of a special solution being injected under the skin around the scar. This is a treatment for atrophic scars to stretch the skin so it is no longer a depression. The results are temporary and the treatment will need to be repeated. It may be effective for six months to up to a year or more depending on the type of filler used and the severity of the scar.
- Microdermabrasion is a cosmetic procedure that gently removes the top layer of the epidermis. It is usually prescribed for severe scarring. Our trained technician uses a handheld device that acts like fine sandpaper. Surface scars may be completely removed. Deeper scars may be minimized in size and appearance.
- Chemical peels are another way to remove the top layers of skin to promote new skin growth. Our team will recommend the best treatment for your skin type and the severity of scarring.
- Microneedling is a treatment that punctures very tiny holes in your skin prompting it to produce new collagen. It is safe and may be effective for certain acne scars.
