What Causes Scars?
Scars are a natural consequence of the skin’s healing process after an injury. Whenever multiple layers of skin are injured, the body begins to make new cells that address the injury. Fibroblasts begin to deposit collagen into the injured layers to help support new tissue and mend injured tissue. The build up of this collagen is what causes the raised appearance of a scar to form.
What Causes Stretch Marks?
While the exact biological mechanisms that stretch marks form through are not entirely known, they form on areas of the body where the skin is stretched for extended periods of time. This is thought to break down the collagen and elastin fibers in the area, leaving the skin there permanently stressed. Stress marks occur most frequently in areas like the breasts, abdomen, thighs, groin, and buttocks.
How Can I Treat Scars and Stretch Marks?
At Dermatology, Laser and Vein Center, we’re proud to offer our clients a wide range of different techniques for either improving the appearance of scars and stretch marks or eliminating them altogether.
When it comes to treating scars, our Fraxel, microneedling, Gentlewaves and ProFractional treatments can be used to address scars on nearly any area of the body. In the case of facial scars, we sometimes recommend that patients undergo Radiesse treatments to help the scars blend in with the natural surface of the skin.
For improving the appearance of stretch marks, we usually recommend that patients undergo either Fraxel or microneedling treatments.
The first step towards beautiful, even, and healthy-looking skin is scheduling a consultation appointment with our practice’s lead physician, Dr. Shalini Gupta. During this appointment, Dr. Gupta will examine your scars or stretch marks, and recommend the treatment that she thinks can best address them.
