What is Rosacea?
Rosacea is a chronic disorder of the skin that most commonly appears on the cheeks, nose, chin, and forehead. It is characterized by the formation of bumps, pimples, persistent redness, skin flushing, and visible blood vessels in these areas.
While the exact cause of this condition is unknown, it seems to be closely tied to abnormalities in the blood vessels of the face. Individuals with light skin and of Northern European descent have a significantly higher risk of developing rosacea, and women are slightly more susceptible to this condition than men.
How is it Treated?
While there is currently no cure for rosacea, there are a number of steps that patients can take to improve their symptoms and decrease the frequency of their flare-ups.
Because rosacea flare-ups can be triggered by a number of external factors, avoiding the foods and weather conditions that can commonly begin breakouts can dramatically reduce symptoms. Common triggers of break outs include:
- Sun/wind exposure
- Hot/cold weather
- Emotional stress
- Vigorous exercise
- Alcohol consumption
- Hot beverages and foods
- Spicy foods
Because everyone’s case is a little different, it’s important for each person to pay close attention to their specific triggers and avoid them when possible.
In addition to making small lifestyle changes, patients can undergo targeted therapies that may help dramatically reduce their symptoms. Our Venus Viva and photodynamic therapy treatments have been shown to help reduce the redness, inflammation, and discomfort associated with rosacea. Our practice also offers patients topical treatments that can lessen the severity and frequency of their rosacea breakouts.
