Acne is commonly thought to be a teenage issue, but this is not necessarily the case. Many adults have acne and develop long-lasting scars. Acne occurs when bacteria and dirt collect in the oil glands under the skin. The oil glands make sebum, an oil that carries the dead skin cells to the surface of the skin to be removed. When the follicle that carries the oil is clogged, a pimple starts to grow. In some cases, the acne inflammation may not leave a scar, but if it breaks the follicle wall and goes deeper into the skin, there is a good chance a scar will form. Fortunately, laser acne treatment can be used at our office to minimize the appearance of these acne scars.
There are two main types of acne scars:
- Keloid or hypertrophic scars appear when the skin produces too much collagen while the wound is healing. This causes raised tissue on the surface of the skin.
- Depressed or atrophic scars occur when there is tissue loss during the healing process. The wound leaves a depression that may look like it was made with an icepick. These scars are small, but boxcar scars are large and resemble a chicken pox scar.
Acne scars often cause a person to feel unattractive. Laser acne treatment is considered the best available method to remove acne scars completely. This may involve ProFractional laser therapy or laser skin resurfacing treatments. During a consultation at our office, Dr. Gupta can evaluate the condition of your acne scars and help you determine which form of treatment is likely to give you the best outcome.
Laser acne treatment works on many skin types. In most cases, a series of treatment sessions are required to achieve the best results. One great benefit from these treatments is that other unwanted skin conditions may be addressed in the process as well. While treating your acne scars, you may also notice that other unwanted conditions, such as fine lines, have faded or completely disappeared.
