What is PRP?
PRP stands for Platelet Rich Plasma. A small sample of blood is taken from the patient and spun down in a centrifuge with a special substrate that separates the platelet rich plasma from the red blood cells. The golden liquid that separates out known as the Platelet Rich Plasma contains a high concentration of Platelets. This serum can be reinjected into the face to add volume in conjuction with or without a dermal fillers and can also helps hair to regrow when injected into the scalp. Finally, it can also be used on the skin surface in conjunction with Microneedling or CIT and Fractional Laser and Radiofrequency treatments.
PRP has excellent safety as it the patient’s own stem cells and has no known side effects.
Platelets in the PRP secrete growth factors and cytokines which attract stem cells to help regenerate new collagen and elastin fibers as well as heal blood vessels. PRP improves collagen growth, supports fat cells and reduces inflammation. It also helps to improve blood flow in the injected area. It basically helps maintain healthy skin and tissue, hence keep the effects of aging at bay. When injected in conjunction with a dermal filler it helps support the filler and increases longevity dramatically. The skin itself also becomes healthier as the tissue gets renewed.
Dr. Gupta especially likes the use of PRP in conjunction with Restylane filler in the under eye area. The restylane is injected deep into the tear trough areas to restore volume and the PRP is injected more superficially intradermally to improve overall skin health. This restores a healthy glow to the skin and helps with improving fine wrinkling and discoloration issues.
PRP is also helpful in improving stretchmarks and acne scars.
